Rooted in the cliffs of the Atlas Mountains, Setti Fatma is worth the day trip for those visiting Marrakech. Known for its famous 7 Waterfalls hike and the breathtaking scenery of the Ourika Valley, Setti Fatma is the best nature escape from the busy and crowded streets of Marrakech.

The mountains are famous for being the home of the Berber communities. The Berber people are known for crossing the desert in camels, for their agriculture that is widely found on mountains and in valleys, and their free spirits. They are known as being “free and noble” people. We had heard many things about the Berbers since arriving in Morocco so we were excited to visit an actual Berber village.

Driving through the winding roads of the Atlas Mountains, there are many off the road stops that you can make on the trip to Setti Fatma. On the way, we stopped at an old abandoned building turned lookout point to get a full view of the Atlas mountains before heading up.

After, we stopped at an Argan oil cooperative. Argan oil cooperatives are the best way to get your hands on some pure, organic argan oil and a great way to support the locals. The one we stopped at gave us a small tour of their herb garden and explained all of the different ways that their herbs can be used for cosmetic and culinary purposes.

Next up was our final destination, Setti Fatma.

Upon arriving, we all climbed out of the mini-van and headed to a local Berber restaurant. We indulged in some typical Berber-style tagine on the riverside. It was the most relaxing lunch ever. We sat in the sun, enjoyed awesome food, listened to the river, and took in the views of the High Atlas Mountains.

We went on the excursion with a group out of Marrakech so there were about 12 of us hiking up to the waterfall. Climbing through the mountains we crossed flimsy wooden and rope bridges, walked through mountain markets, and trekked carefully on slippery rocks. Finally (it was a short hike), we had reached the first waterfall and the only one that we would see due to time restrictions.

If you are traveling to Marrakech and have interest in visiting Setti Fatma, here is a trip through Lonely Planet. Although it is not the same one, it is very similar to the one that I did. Setti Fatma was the nature escape I needed to take a mental break away from the wildness of Marrakech and it was my favorite thing I did during my trip. Highly recommended if you are looking for a hike.

Tips for Hiking in Setti Fadma

-Boots are necessary and your most comfortable option.

-Layers: Although it was a hot day, it was chilly when reaching the tops of the mountains; carrying a light sweater is your best bet.

-Bring snacks and water
